A NOISE MODEL AND COMPUTER PROGRAM FOR HIGHWAY NOISE ABATEMENT DESIGN

THE MOTOR VEHICLE/HIGHWAY NOISE MODEL HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO ESTIMATE THE NOISE LEVELS GENERATED AS A RESULT OF ALTERNATIVE TRAFFIC FLOWS AND VEHICLE MIXES AND TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF NOISE ABATEMENT ALTERNATIVES. THE SYSTEM CONTAINS THREE ELEMENTS: NOISE SOURCE, NOISE PATH, AND RECEIVER. THE NOISE SPECTRA ARE DEFINED FOR EIGHT OCTAVE BANDS CENTERED BETWEEN 62.5 HZ AND 8000 HZ. THE SOUND LEVEL AT ANY RECEIVER POINT IS THE ENERGY SUM OF THE SOUND RAYS FROM ALL OF THE SOURCES. THE SOUND RAYS FROM ANY SINGLE SOURCE TO RECEIVER CAN REFLECT, DIFFRACT OR BE DIRECT. THE PROGRAM PERMITS MORE THAN ONE RAY TO BE CONSIDERED DURING A RUN. THE USER IS REQUIRED TO SPECIFY THE SOUND PATHS (RAYS) IN TERMS OF SURFACES INVOLVED; THE PROGRAM DOES NOT DEVISE ANY SOUND PATHS. THE PATHS ARE DESIGNATED BY THE NUMBER OF REFLECTIONS BEFORE A DIFFRACTION AND THE SURFACES FROM WHICH REFLECTIONS OCCUR, BY A POSSIBLE SINGLE DIFFRACTION, AND BY THE NUMBER OF REFLECTIONS AND THE SURFACES FROM WHICH REFLECTIONS OCCUR, AFTER A SINGLE DIFFRACTION. THE PROGRAM INCLUDES CONSIDERATION OF THE REDUCTION OF SOUND INTENSITY DUE TO AIR ABSORPTION AND EXCESS ATTENUATION FROM WIND CONDITIONS, THICK GRASS AND SHRUBBERY AREAS AND TREE ZONES. AN EXAMPLE IS GIVEN.
