GEOMETRIC HIGHWAY DESIGN

THE COMMITTEE ON GEOMETRIC HIGHWAY DESIGN WAS ORGANIZED EARLY IN 1948 TO STIMULATE RESEARCH. A FOUR-STEP PROGRAM WAS AGREED: (1) DETERMINATION OF SCOPE, (2) IDENTIFICATION OF SUBJECT GROUPS (DESIGN PHASES) IN NEED OF RESEARCH, ALONG WITH PRIORITY RANKINGS, (3) FORMULATION OF PROBLEM STATEMENTS FOR ALL SUBJECTS, AND (4) CREATION OF A PROGRAM TO ENCOURAGE AND ASSIST THE RESEARCH TOPICS IDENTIFIED. AT PRESENT THE COMMITTEE IS ABOUT TO TAKE THE THIRD STEP. TWENTY-FIVE SUBJECTS ARE IDENTIFIED, BROKEN DOWN INTO THREE GROUPS.
