DESIGN AND SHAPE ANALYSIS OF CAST STEEL GUARDRAIL POSTS

STATIC EXPERIMENTAL STRESS ANALYSIS WAS CONDUCTED ON BRIDGE RAIL POST DESIGNS, SIMULATING ACTUAL LOADS. STRAIN GAGES WERE USED TO MEASURE STRAINS IN EACH GUARDRAIL POST TESTED, AND A GENERAL CALIBRATION SURVEY WAS MADE ON THE TENSION MEMBER OF A 2-RAIL H-BEAM POST. DESTRUCTION TESTS WERE ALSO CONDUCTED AND IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT STEEL CASTINGS OF PRESENT DESIGNS EXHIBIT SUPERIOR STRENGTH. THE ANCHORING OF THE CAST POST NEEDS TO BE IMPROVED AND THE UPPER PORTION OF THE POST IS RELATIVELY LOW STRESSED, THEREFORE OVER DESIGNED.
