FULL-SCALE APPRAISALS OF GUARDRAIL INSTALLATIONS BY CAR IMPACT TESTS

AN EVALUATION OF GUARDRAIL INSTALLATIONS BY CAR IMPACT TESTS IS PRESENTED. THE TESTS CONDUCTED WERE STANDARD SPEED AND HIGH SPEED IMPACT AT AN ANGLE OF 20 DEGREES TO THE GUARDRAIL. IT WAS OBSERVED THAT IF AN AUTOMOBILE TRAVELING 65 MPH, IN THE PASSING LANE OF A FOUR-LANE DUAL HIGHWAY, TURNS ITS STEERING WHEEL RAPIDLY TO THE RIGHT, THE VEHICLE CAN DEVELOP A 20 DEGREE ANGLE WITH A GUARDRAIL LOCATED 10 FT FROM THE PAVEMENT EDGE. INSTALLATION METHODS AND DIFFERENT TYPES OF GUARDRAILS WERE TESTED. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE CONCERNING THE DESIGN OF GUARDRAILS AND POSTS.
