ADAPATION OF ELASTIC THEORY TO THE DESIGN OF CIRCULAR CONDUITS

EXISTING DESIGN METHODS FOR BURIED CONDUITS ARE BASED LARGELY ON OVER-SIMLIFIED THEORIES, WHICH, ALTHOUGH VALID WITHIN THE LIMITS OF THE FIELD TESTS ON WHICH THEY ARE BASED, REQUIRED THE USE OF PARAMETERS WHOSE VALUES CAN BE ONLY CRUDELY ESTIMATED FROM "EXPERIENCE" TABLES. A RIGOROUS SOLUTION, BASED ON A CONTINUUM APPROACH THAT CONSIDERS AN ELASTIC TUBE SURROUNDED BY AN INFINITE ELASTIC MEDIUM LOADED BY A UNIDIRECTIONAL UNIFORMLY DISTRIBUTED OVERPRESSURE, IS ADAPTED FOR DESIGN USE. IN ITS CURRENT FORM, THE RESULTING DESIGN METHOD HAS SOME LIMITATIONS, IN THAT IT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR SHALLOW COVER CONDITIONS AND IT CANNOT HANDLE VARIATIONS IN THE COMPRESSIBILITY OF THE SURROUNDING SOIL; NEVERTHELESS, IT CAN BE APPLIED TO A WIDE RANGE OF COVER HEIGHTS, SOIL COMPRESSIBILITIES, AND CONDUIT STIFFNESSES. THE PARAMETERS REQUIRED IN THE DESIGN ARE BASIC SOIL PROPERTIES. INSOFAR AS POSSIBLE, GOOD AGREEMENT IS INDICATED BETWEEN THE RESULT OF THIS METHOD AND EXISTING METHODS; HOWEVER, FURTHER FIELD TESTING IS REQUIRED TO EVALUATE THE VALIDITY FOR EXTENDED CONDITIONS. /AUTHOR/
