ANALYTICAL AERIAL TRIANGULATION FOR HIGHWAY LOCATION AND DESIGN

ONE OF THE PROBLEMS IN USING ANALYTIC AEROTRIANGULATION FOR HIGHWAY MAPPING IS VERTICAL CONTROL EXTENSION FOR LARGE- SCALE PHOTOGRAPHS. A SIMPLIFIED BUT DETAILED MATHEMATICAL SOLUTION IS PRESENTED FOR AN ANALYTIC AEROTRIANGULATION PROCEDURE THAT IS EXACT TO WITHIN LIMITS THAT ARE NEGLIGIBLE IN THEIR EFFECT ON THE RESULTING ERRORS OBTAINED FROM USING ACTUAL LARGE-SCALE PHOTOGRAPHIC DATA. THE PROCEDURE IS OF THE CANTILEVER STRIP ASSEMBLY TYPE, WHERE RELATIVE AND ABSOLUTE ORIENTATION IS PERFORMED ON THE FIRST MODEL WITH THE REMAINING MODELS BEING RELATIVELY ORIENTED AND SCALED, SIMILAR TO THE ANALOG AEROTRIANGULATION PROCEDURE USED WITH THE ZEISS C-8 STEREOPLANIGRAPH. THE THEORY AND EQUATIONS DEVELOPED IN THE PAPER WERE INCORPORATED INTO A COMPUTER PROGRAM AND TESTED WITH HYPOTHETICAL DATA. THE PROCEDURE CAN BE USED IN PRODUCTION OR AS A RESEARCH TOOL TO STUDY AND EVALUATE CONTROL EXTENSION ERRORS CAUSED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHY, MEASUREMENT OF PHOTOGRAPH COORDINATES, GROUND CONTROL, OR ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES.
