EXPERIMENTAL STRESS ANALYSIS OF BEAM-AND-SLAB, AND CELLULAR, SKEW BRIDGES

AS PART OF A MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT RESEARCH CONTRACT, FOUR LARGE-SCALE PRESTRESSED CONCRETE MODELS OF HIGHLY SKEWED BRIDGE DECKS WERE CONSTRUCTED AND TESTED. DETAILS OF SPECIAL TESTING EQUIPMENT DESIGNED FOR THE PURPOSE ARE GIVEN TOGETHER WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE TESTS. BASED ON STRESS, DEFLECTION, AND REACTION DISTRIBUTIONS, THE SUITABILITY OF THE FOUR TYPES OF CONSTRUCTION USED ARE COMPARED. RESULTS PREDICTED BY ANALYSIS ARE COMPARED WITH EMPIRICAL VALUES AND THE SUITABILITY OF THE GRILLAGE METHOD FOR USE WITH ECCENTRICALLY STIFFENED AND MULT-CELL BOX BEAM SKEW BRIDGE DECKS IS ASSESSED. /TRRL/A/
