BEHAVIOR OF CIVIL ENGINEERING STRUCTURES SUBJECTED TO ACTUAL LOADING

MOVING LOADS, EFFECTS OF MACHINERY, DIFFERENT KINDS OF BLAST PRESSURE OR WIND GUST, AND CASES WHERE THE SUPPORTS OF THE STRUCTURE MOVE, REPRESENT INFLUENCES WHICH CANNOT BE DEALT WITH BY SUPPOSITIONS APPLIED BY THE STATICS OF STRUCTURES. LOADING SHOULD BE TREATED AS THE INTERACTION OF TWO OR MORE MECHANICAL SYSTEMS, ACTIVE AND PASSIVE. THE EQUILIBRIUM DURING THE INTERACTION OF MECHANICAL SYSTEMS IS AN INSTANTANEOUS STATE WHICH COULD BE ANALYSED IF THE TIME IS STOPPED. THE BASIC FEATURE OF AN ACTUAL LOADED STRUCTURE INVOLVES THE ALTERNATING TRANSFER OF ENERGY BETWEEN ITS POTENTIAL AND KINETIC FORMS. A USEFUL TOOL IN THE ANALYSIS OF THE STRUCTURAL RESPONSE IS GIVEN BY THE ELEMENTARY LUMPED-PARAMETER MODEL COMPRISED OF IDEAL SPRING, MASS AND DAMPER. /AUTHOR/
