THE ROAD IN RELATION TO TRAFFIC REQUIREMENTS--SWEDEN

A MODEL FOR CALCULATING THE EFFECT OF LONGITUDINAL PROFILES ON THE SPEED OF HEAVY VEHICLES IS DESCRIBED WHICH IS BASED ON SIMPLIFIED PHYSICAL CONSIDERATION. THE MODEL IS QUITE SIMPLE TO USE AND MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO DESCRIBE ALL THE VEHICLES OF A POPULATION, AND NOT ONLY A SINGLE TYPE OF VEHICLE. IN ORDER TO TEST THIS MODEL THE VARIATION IN THE SPEED OF FREEMOVING VEHICLES WAS STUDIED ON 18 UPGRADES WHICH DIFFERED IN SLOPE AND IN LENGTH. THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE MEASURED VALUES OF TIME AND SPEED AND THE CORRESPONDING VALUES CALCULATED WITH THE HELP OF THE MODEL WAS FOUND TO BE VERY CLOSE. SOME RESULTS WHICH CAN BE OBTAINED FROM THE MODEL ARE EXEMPLIFIED IN THE FORM OF SPEED-DISTANCE CURVES FOR DIFFERENT VEHICLES ON VARIOUS GRADIENTS. THIS STUDY ALSO INCLUDES AN ANALYSIS OF LONGITUDINAL SURFACE PROFILES BY MEANS OF SLOPE MEASURING PROFILOMETERS. A SLOPE MEASURING DEVICE (CHLOE PROFILOMETER) HAS BEEN EMPLOYED FOR FOLLOW-UP OF THE CHANGE OF THE BEARING CAPACITY OF VARIOUS TEST ROADS AND SOME OTHER PARTICULAR ROADS BY MEASUREMENT OF THE SLOPE VARIANCE OF THE ROAD SURFACE. THE SLOPE METER HAS BEEN SLIGHTLY MODIFIED, ESPECIALLY THE DATA LOGGING TECHNIQUE, SO THAT EACH INDIVIDUAL READING IS RECORDED ON PUNCHED TAPE WHICH IS PROCESSED IN AUTOMATIC COMPUTING EQUIPMENT. IN THIS WAY OTHER PROFILE PARAMETERS THAN THE SLOPE VARIANCE CAN BE ANALYZED, SUCH AS THE SPECTRAL DISTRIBUTION OF THE PROFILE ORDINATES AND THE RADIUS OF CURVATURE. A MATHEMATICAL APPROACH TO RECORDING OF THE PROFILE ITSELF TO COMPENSATE FOR THE LIMITED LENGTH OF THE TOWING ROAD IS SUGGESTED. ANOTHER PART OF THIS STUDY DEALS WITH THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE AMOUNT OF WATER ON THE ROAD SURFACE BY FRICTION MEASUREMENTS.
