THE HEAVY VEHICLE SIMULATOR
THE HEAVY VEHICLE SIMULATOR (HVS) WHICH IS COMPLETELY MOBILE AND MOVES ON ITS OWN POWER, CAN USE EXISTING ROADS OR SPECIALLY BUILT TEST SECTIONS TO OBTAIN A LARGE NUMBER OF PASSES OF HEAVY WHEEL LOADS OVER A SHORT PERIOD. THE HEART OF THE ENGINE IS A 70 KW (95 HP) CATERPILLER ENGINE, AND A 20 KWA ALTERNATOR SUPPLIES ELECTRIC POWER TO THE COMPONENTS. HIGH-PRESSURE HYDRAULIC OIL IS USED DURING TRAVEL BETWEEN SITES TO DRIVE THE MACHINE BY MEANS OF FOUR HYDRAULIC MOTORS. BOTH FRONT AND REAR WHEELS ARE STEERED HYDRAULICALLY. THE VEHICLE IS MOVED INTO POSITION AND THE LOAD IS REMOVED FROM THE WHEELS BY MEANS OF FOUR JACKS WHICH ALSO LEVEL THE MACHINE WITH THE PAVEMENT. THE FUNCTIONS PERFORMED BY THE TEST WHEEL (WHICH MOVES ON RAILS) ARE LISTED. IT CAN CARRY OUT STATIC OR DYNAMIC PLATE LOADING TESTS; TRAFFICKING IN A SINGLE PATH, WITH THE WHEEL LOADED WHILE MOVING FORWARD ONLY OR WHILE MOVING BOTH FORWARD AND BACKWARD; AND TRAFFICKING IN A SERIES OF PARALLEL PATHS OVER A WIDTH OF 0.95 M WITH THE WHEEL LOADED OR WHILE MOVING FORWARD, OR WHILE MOVING FORWARD AND BACK- WARD. THE CONTROL OF VERTICAL, LATERAL, AND LONGITUDINAL MOVEMENTS IS DESCRIBED. A CONSTANT VERTICAL LOAD IS ASSUMED BY A CONSTANT PRESSURE PUMP WHICH OPERATES TWO HYDRAULIC CYLINDERS. THE MOVEMENT LENGTHWISE IS MADE WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF A CHAIN DRIVE WHICH IS CONNECTED TO HYDRAULIC MOTORS WHICH IN TURN ARE POWERED BY THE MAIN POWER UNIT. TO THE EFFECT OF WHEELS ON A WIDE SECTION OF ROAD, THE TEST WHEEL COVERS A TOTAL WIDTH OF 950 MM. A DIAGRAMATIC SECTION OF THE HVS IS PRESENTED, AS ARE ALSO THE RESULTS OF BENKELMAN BEAM DEFLECTION, DEHLEN CURVATURE AND PERMANENT DEFORMATIONS TESTS.
