SHOULDER EXPERIENCE IN ILLINOIS

IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF CAM, PAM AND BAM STABILIZED SHOULDERS, A DENSE-GRADED TRENCHED GRANULAR SUBBASE WAS USED UNDER THE PAVEMENT. THE PROBLEM OF WINTER HEAVING OF THE SHOULDERS ABOVE THE PAVEMENT WAS PARTIALLY ALLEVIATED BY THE USE OF CEMENTED SUBBASE AND ALSO BY THE USE OF OPEN-GRADED MATERIAL WHICH EXTENDED TO THE SIDE SLOPE. LONGITUDINAL UNDERDRAINS ON THE PAVEMENT EDGE MAY SERVE AS AN ALTERNATE FOR THE OPEN-GRADED SUBBASE IN REMOVING UNWANTED WATER. GRAVEL OR CRUSHED STONE WEDGE AT THE PAVEMENT EDGE TO BRING THE SHOULDER UP TO THE DERIVED GRADE, HAS BEEN USED FOR BITUMINOUS CONCRETE RESURFACING WORK. EIGHTEEN-INCH THICK BITUMINOUS CONCRETE WAS USED TO MOVE THE UNPAVED SHOULDER AREA OUT FROM THE MAINLINE WHEEL PATHS. EDGE-STRIPING IS USED TO HELP RE- TAIN TRAFFIC IN THE PAVEMENT AREA. IT IS OBSERVED THAT AL- THOUGH SHOULDER STRUCTURE ITSELF CAN BE A LIGHTER SECTION THAN THE MAINLINE PAVEMENT, DURABILITY AND UNDER-DRAINAGE REQUIREMENTS ARE SUCH THAT LOWER COSTS HAVE NOT BEEN REAL- IZED.
