THE SH-WAVE METHOD OF INVESTIGATING ROAD PAVEMENTS
THE SH-WAVE (HORIZONTALLY POLARIZED SHEAR WAVES) METHOD PROVIDES A NON-DESTRUCTIVE PROCEDURE FOR INVESTIGATING THE IN SITU ELASTIC PROPERTIES OF LAYERED PAVEMENTS. THE VELOCITY OF SH-WAVES ALONG THE SURFACE OF A LAYERED PAVEMENT IS DEPENDENT ON THE LAYER MATERIAL PROPERTIES AND THE FREQUENCY OF THE WAVE MOTION. BY MEASURING THE SURFACE PHASE VELOCITY AT A NUMBER OF FREQUENCIES IT IS POSSIBLE TO REDUCE THE DYNAMIC SHEAR MODULI OF THE LAYER MATERIALS. IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE TO DEFINE THE VARIATIONS IN THE PROPERTY OF A SINGLE LAYER BY OBSERVING AT A FIXED FREQUENCY, THE VARIATIONS IN THE SURFACE PHASE VELOCITY POSITION. THE LEVEL OF INVESTIGATION IS RESTRICTED BY THE DEGREE THE PAVEMENT UNDER INVESTIGATION DEPARTS FROM THAT ASSUMED IN DEVELOPING THE THEORETICAL DISPERSION RELATIONSHIPS. UNFORTUNATELY THE SH-WAVE METHOD OF INVESTIGATING ROAD PAVEMENTS IS NECESSARY IN THE TESTING AND INTERPRETATION PROCESSES.
