PHOTOGRAPHIC INVENTORY

EACH SUMMER FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS THE BRITISH COLUMBIA DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS HAS BEEN MAKING A PHOTOGRAPHIC INVENTORY OF THE HIGHWAY SYSTEM. TOTAL COVERAGE IS APPROXI- MATELY 6000 MILES PER YEAR. A 16-MM CAMERA IS SET IN AN INSTRUMENT PACKAGE MOUNTED THROUGH THE ROOF OF THE VAN. THE UPPER FIFTH OF THE PICTURE FRAME (FULL WIDTH) SHOWS THE INSTRUMENTS THROUGH MIRRORS: DATE, TIME, AND LOCATION INFORMATION; ODOMETER (WITH MANUAL RESET); BALL BANK INDICATOR; TWO ROUGHNESS METERS, ONE FOR EACH FRAME INTERVAL AND ANOTHER FOR 1000-FOOT SECTIONS; ALTIMETER; SPEEDOMETER; AND VARIOUS INDICATOR LIGHTS. IN 1971 THE FILM INVENTORY WAS REVIEWED, AND ALL 1000-FOOT SECTIONS WITH ROUGHNESS READINGS OF 3.2 OR LESS WERE RECORDED FOR CONSIDERATION FOR THE CURRENT PAVING PROGRAM. SOME OF THESE READINGS HAVE BEEN COMPARED AND CORRELATED WITH 1969 PRESENT PERFORMANCE RATINGS. THE PHOTOGRAPHIC INVENTORY HAS PROVED A VALUABLE TOOL. SIX MAJOR ADVANTAGES OF THE RECORD ARE NOTED.
