STUDDED TIRE EFFECTS ON PAVEMENTS AND TRAFFIC SAFETY IN MINNESOTA

ALTHOUGH STUDDED TIRES ARE NOW ILLEGAL FOR MINNESOTA RESIDENTS, EXCEPT FOR NONRESIDENTS WHO ARE GIVEN 30 DAYS TO DRIVE WITH STUDDED TIRES; THEY WERE LEGAL FOR 6 WINTERS FROM 1965 TO 1971. THIS IS A REPORT ON A NUMBER OF SUDIES THAT HAD NOT BEEN COMPLETED BY JANUARY 1971; HOW HIGHWAY SURFACE WEAR CONTINUED TO PROGRESS THROUGH THE WINTER OF 1970-71 IS SHOWN. THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF USING STUDDED TIRES ARE REVIEWED IN TERMS OF PAVEMENT WEAR AND TRAFFIC SAFETY.
