STE. ANNE TEST ROAD- RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PREDICTED FRACTURE TEMPERATURES AND LOW TEMPERATURE FIELD PERFORMANCE WITH DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

THIS REPORT DISCUSSES THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN LABORATORY PREDICTED FRACTURE TEMPERATURES AND FRACTURE TEMPERATURE BASED ON NOMOGRAPHIC PROCEDURES AND COMPARES THE THE RESULTS TO THE ACTUAL FIELD PERFORMANCE OF THE STE. ANNE TEST SECTIONS. STIFFNESS MODULUS, BREAKING STRESS, STRAIN AT BREAK, THERMAL CONTRACTION COEFFIEIENT, AND CRACKING TERMPERATURE WERE CALCULATED FROM MEASUREMENTS MADE ON SPECIMENS CUT FROM LABORATORY COMPACTED PAVEMENT SLABS. THE THERMAL STRESS AND BREAKING STRESS FOR THE FIELD SPECIMENS WERE CALCULATED FROM THE TENSILE PROPERTIES OF THE ASPHALT BINDER USED IN THE MIX. PREDICTED FRACTURE TEMPERATURES FOR LABORATORY AND FIELD SECTIONS CORRELATED WELL WITH EACH OTHER AS WELL AS WITH THE OBSERVED PAVEMENT SUFFACE TEMPERATURES AT THE TIME OF SIGNIFICANT INITIAL CRACKING. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE TENDENCY OF A MIX TO CRACK AT LOW TEMPERATURES CAN BE IN INDICATED BY A KNOWLEDGE OF THE BINDER STIFFNESS MODULUS AT LOW TEMPERATURES AND LONG LOADING TIME.
