TEXTURE DEPTH MEASUREMENTS ON STATE HIGHWAYS IN THE NETHERLANDS /IN DUTCH/

THIS ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE ROLE OF THE TEXTURE DEPTH (TD) EXPRESSED IN MM IN THE SKIDDING RESISTANCE OF WET ROADS, ESPECIALLY AT HIGH SPEEDS. IN THE NETHERLANDS, A TD OF AT LEAST 0.5 MM, DETERMINED BY THE BRITISH 'SAND-PATCH' METHOD, IS CONSIDERED NECESSARY. IT WAS SHOWN THAT SURFACE DRESSINGS MEET THIS REQUIREMENT ADEQUATELY IF THE APPLICATION IS CAREFULLY CARRIED OUT. THE SAME APPLIES TO COARSE DENSE ASPHALTIC CONCRETE SPREAD WITH CHIPPINGS 5/8, AND TO OPEN- TEXTURED ASPHALTIC CONCRETE. MORE DURABLE COARSE TEXTURES CAN BE OBTAINED BY THE USE OF SYNTHETIC RESINS INSTEAD OF BITUMEN IN SURFACE DRESSINGS. MECHANICAL SPREADING OF CHIPPINGS SHOULD BE GIVEN PREFERENCE OVER SPREADING BY HAND, ESPECIALLY IN THE CASE OF CHIPPINGS 2/5. FINER CHIPPINGS GIVE UNSATISFACTORY RESULTS, SO DO SLURRY SEALS. IT IS NOT YET CLEAR WHETHER THERE IS, WITH RESPECT TO THE TEXTURE DEPTH, ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COARSE AND FINE DENSE ASPHALTIC CONCRETE, PARTICULARLY IN COURSE OF TIME. MEASUREMENT RESULTS SHOW THAT THERE EXISTS A RELATIVE REDUCTION IN FRICTION COEFFICIENT OF A WET ROAD AT INCREASING SPEED THE GREATER AS THE TEXTURE DEPTH IS SMALLER. /SWOV/RWL(A)/TRRL/
