TESTS ON AND EXPERIENCE GAINED WITH LONGITUDINAL AND TRANSVERSE JOINTS IN CONCRETE ROADS IN AUSTRIA /IN GERMAN/

THE PRINCIPLE FEATURES OF THE NEW CONSTRUCTION METHOD ARE: (1) THE SURFACING IS LAID ON A LAYER OF HOT BITUMEN; (2) NO DOWELS OR STEEL MATS ARE USED; (3) NO EXPANSION JOINTS OR JOINT INSERTS ARE USED; (4) TRANSVERSE JOINTS ARE SPACED 5 M APART AND ARE ONLY 2.0-2.2 MM WIDE, MAKING JOINT SEALING UNNECESSARY; AND (5) THE LONGITUDINAL JOINTS ARE CONSTRUCTED AS JOINTS WHICH DO NOT ALLOW FOR EXPANSION, AND THEREFORE REQUIRE NO FILLER. THE ROADS BUILT IN THIS WAY ARE SAID TO BE MORE DURABLE, MORE ECONOMICAL TO BUILD, AND EASIER TO REPAIR THAN CONVENTIONAL STRUCTURES. /TRRL/
