THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES THE DESIGN OF ROADS TO WITHSTAND LOADS FROM VERY HEAVY VEHICLES, AND GIVES AS AN EXAMPLE AN 18 CM THICK BITUMINOUS ROADBASE COMPLETE WITH A BASECOURSE AND WEARING COURSE. NEW STANDARDS RECENTLY INTRODUCED ARE DISCUSSED AND COMPARED WITH THE OLD AUSTRIAN STANDARDS AND SWISS STANDARDS. COMMENT IS MADE OF THE WEAR CAUSED BY STUDDED TIRES AND DEVELOPMENT IN SURFACINGS WHICH WITHSTAND WEAR ARE OUTLINED. /TRRL/
