EROSION CONTROL IN SUBDIVISION DEVELOPMENT
ACCELERATED EROSION AND SEDIMENT PRODUCTION IS NOT NEW. CIVILIZATIONS LONG SINCE FORGOTTEN EXPERIENCE THE PROBLEM OF UNCHECKED EROSION AND PRODIGIOUS SEDIMENTATION. MANY TIMES THIS PROBLEM RESULTED FROM AGRICULTURAL MISUSE OF LAND. TODAY, EXCESSIVE EROSION AND SEDIMENTATION IS ASSOCIATED WITH URBAN GROWTH. EROSION IS EXPENSIVE WHEREVER IT OCCURS. IN URBANIZING AREAS IT REQUIRES THE REPLACEMENT OF LOST SOIL, DRAINAGE PIPES, PAVEMENT AND EQUIPMENT. SEDIMENT IS EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE. IT IS A POLLUTANT AFFECTING LAND, WATER AND AIR. IN WATER, EITHER IN TRANSPORT OR IN DEPOSIT, IT DAMAGES AQUATIC HABITAT BY SMOTHERING AND SHADING FOOD ORGANISMS; IT CARRIES PLANT NUTRIENTS AND TOXIC MATERIALS; IT INCREASES WATER TREATMENT COSTS. DEPOSITED ON LAND, IT POSES A CLEAN-UP COST, DAMAGES BUILDINGS AND EQUIPMENT AND INTERFERES WITH INTENDED USES. AIR QUALITY IS REDUCED BY AIR-BORNE SEDIMENT. /AUTHOR/
