THE TRANSITION FROM THE INITIAL EMPIRICAL AND SEMIEMPIRICAL PROCEDURES TO IMPROVED ANALYTICAL PROCEDURES OF AIRFIELD PAVEMENT DESIGN WHICH TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE PRINCIPAL PARAMETERS AFFECTING PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE IS REVIEWED. THE ROLE OF IMPROVED COMPUTATIONAL TECHNIQUES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOPHISTICATED DESIGN PROCEDURES IS POINTED OUT.
