DETERMINATION OF THE ELASTIC MODULI OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT COMPONENTS

AS PART OF AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE APPLICABILITY OF THE AASHO ROAD TEST DESIGN EQUATIONS TO PENNSYLVANIA CONDITIONS, FIELD EVALUATIONS WERE MADE DURING THE SUMMERS OF 1969 AND 1970 OF THE ELASTIC MODULI OF SEVERAL FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT COMPONENTS. EACH PAVEMENT STUDIED CONSISTED OF THE SAME AC SURFACE LAYER, ONE OF FIVE BASE TYPES (AGGREGATE BITUMINOUS, AGGREGATE CEMENT, AGGREGATE LIME POZZOLAN, BITUMINOUS CONCRETE, OR CRUSHED AGGREGATE), AND A CRUSHED AGGREGATE SUBBASE. THE PAVEMENT SECTIONS WERE SUPPORTED ON SUBGRADE SOILS HAVING A RANGE OF SUPPORTING CAPACITIES. THE ELASTIC MODULI FOR EACH LAYER WERE COMPUTED BY (1) BURMISTER'S TWO-LAYER ELASTIC THEORY AND (2) AN AXISYMMETRIC FINITE ELEMENT PROGRAM. RESULTS WITH THE TWO THEORIES WERE IN GOOD AGREEMENT.
