STRAINS IN BITUMINOUS CONCCRETE PAVEMENTS, WITH DISCUSSIONS AND CLOSURE

MODERN PAVEMENT DESIGN METHODS REQUIRE A KNOWLEDGE OF THE RESPONSE OF PAVEMENTS TO WHEEL LOADS. STRAINS ARE OF PARTICULAR INTEREST BECAUSE OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF FATIGUE AS A MAJOR SOURCE OF FAILURE IN BITUMEN BOUND LAYERS. THE AIM OF THIS STUDY WAS TO PROVIDE SOME INSIGHT INTO THE APPLICABILITY OF ELASTIC LAYERED THEORY TO ACUTAL PAVEMENT BEHAVIOR UNDER DYNAMIC LOADING. SURFACE STRAIN, AS MEASURED BY WIRE RESISTANCE STRAIN GAUGES, WAS USED AS AN INDICATION OF BEHAVIOR UNDER CAREFULLY CONTROLLED FULL SCALE DYNAMIC LOAD TESTS. REASONABLE AGREEMENT OF THE FIELD MEASUREMENTS WITH PREDICTIONS MADE FROM ELASTIC ANALYSIS USING THE FINITE ELEMENT TECHNIQUE WAS OBTAINED. THE PREDICTION OF RADIAL STRAIN WAS MARKEDLY IMPROVED BY CONSIDERING THE INCREASE IN STIFFNESS OF THE PAVEMENT UNDER LOAD. IN SPITE OF THIS GENERAL AGREEMENT, A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF READINGS VARIED CONSIDERABLY FROM THE PREDICTED VALUES, WHICH IS ATTRIBUTED TO INHERENT VARIATIONS IN STRAIN IN THE PAVEMENT.
