FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT DESIGN FOR HEAVY AIRCRAFT /IN FRENCH/

THE DETERMINATION OF STRESS DISTRIBUTION IN SURFACINGS AND IN-SITU MEASUREMENTS WERE USED TO STUDY THE LOADING EFFECTS OF MULTI-WHEELED UNDERCARRIAGE AIRCRAFT SUCH AS THE BOEING 747. CURVES WERE ESTABLISHED FOR RUNWAYS FOR MODERN AIRCRAFT TYPES, USING TECHNIQUES DERIVED FROM THOSE OF PAVEMENT DESIGN. ONE OF THE FINDINGS OF THE STUDY WAS THAT IF THE SUBGRADE IS OF ADEQUATE QUALITY, THE BOEING 707-320B AND THE BOEING 747 REQUIRE THE SAME SURFACING THICKNESS. IT IS, HOWEVER, RECOMMENDED TO ADD AN EXTRA BITUMINOUS LAYER ON RUNWAYS DESIGNED FOR THE BOEING 707-280B SO AS TO FACILITATE THEIR USE BY THE BOEING 747. DETAILS ON THE DESIGN METHOD ADOPTED, THE EFFECTS OF LOADS CAUSED BY MULTIPLE WHEELS, PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS, CHARACTERISTICS OF SURFACING MATERIAL, AND RUNWAY LIGHTING ARE GIVEN IN APPENDICES. /TRRL/
