SOME SINGLE- AND MULTI-SITE MODELS OF RAINFALL WITHIN DISCRETE TIME INCREMENTS

DAILY RAINFALL AT A SITE IS SYNTHESIZED IN TWO STAGES: FIRST BY RANDOM SELECTION OF DURATION OF ALTERNATING WET AND DRY SPELLS AND THEN BY A MARKOV CHAIN OF DAILY RAINFALL AMOUNTS WITHIN EACH WET SPELL. EXTENSION OF THE SINGLE-SITE SEQUENCE TO OTHER SITES MAY BE TACKLED BY SAMPLING FROM HISTORICAL PATTERNS BUT IS MORE ELEGANTLY ACHIEVED BY MULTIVARIATE VERSIONS OF THE MARKOV CHAIN. A 'MAGIC CARPET' RAINFALL MODEL OFFERS AN ALTERNATIVE MULTISITE GENERATION PROCESS, WHICH COMBINES STOCHASTIC STORM OCCURRENCES WITH DETERMINISTIC EVOLUTIN OF INDIVIDUAL STORMS AND PRESET MOTIONS ACROSS A RIVER BASIN. /AUTHOR/
