COMMITTEE ON SURFACE DRAINAGE OF HIGHWAYS - RESEARCH NEEDS

ONE FUNCTION OF HIGHWAY RESEARCH BOARD COMMITTEES IS TO ASSESS RESEARCH NEEDS AND PREPARE PROBLEM STATEMENTS FOR USE BY FINANCIAL SPONSORS, THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY, GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES, INDUSTRY, AND PRACTICING PROFESSIONALS. THE SURFACE DRAINAGE COMMITTEE, WHOSE PRIMARY AREAS OF CONCERN ARE HYDROLOGY AND HYDRAULICS AS RELATED TO HIGHWAY ENGINEERING, HAS ISSUED A SET OF PROBLEM STATEMENTS RANKED IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER OF PRIORITY: FLOOD-FREQUENCY PREDICTIONS FOR BRIDGE AND CULVERT DESIGN, ENERGY DISSIPATION AT CULVERT OUTLETS AND STORM DRAIN OUTLETS, SCOUR AROUND BRIDGE PIERS AND ABUTMENTS, DESIGN OF STABLE AND ECONOMICAL DRAINAGE CHANNELS, INTEGRATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS WITH CULVERT HYDRAULICS AND ECONOMICS, DESIGN OF SEDIMENT BASINS, EFFECTIVENESS OF SCOUR PREVENTION MEASURES AT BRIDGE PIERS AND ABUTMENTS, TESTING AND EVALUATION OF EXPRESSWAY DRAINAGE DESIGN, CRITERIA FOR ANALYSIS OF UNUSUAL EVENTS IN ANNUAL FLOOD PEAK SERIES, SPUR DIKES AT BRIDGE ABUTMENTS, RIVER TRAINING WORKS AS RELATED TO HIGHWAYS, SCOUR CONTROL IN BRIDGE PIER CONSTRUCTION, AND TESTING AND EVALUATION OF INVERTED SIPHONS FOR SANITARY, COMBINED, AND/OR STORM SEWERS.
