THE ROLE OF STREAM FLOW SIMULATION MODELS IN THE DESIGN OF HIGHWAY DRAINAGE FACILITIES

THE STANFORD STREAMFLOW SIMULATION MODEL IS PRESENTED TO AID IN THE PREDICTING OF WATERSHED FLOW QUANTITIES NEEDED FOR THE DESIGN OF HIGHWAY DRAINAGE FACILITIES. A CURSORY REVIEW OF EXISTING METHODS USED INCLUDES THE RAINFALL AND STREAMFLOW FREQUENCY METHODS. OF THESE, THE COMPUTER BASED CONTINUOUS SIMULATION PRODUCED THE MOST RELIABLE RESULTS. USING BASIC CLIMATOLOGICAL INPUTS AND PHYSICAL WATERSHED PARAMETERS, THE MODEL ATTEMPTS TO SIMULATE THE MOISTURE BALANCE IN A WATERSHED TO PRODUCE SYNTHESIZED STREAMFLOW AND EVAPOTRANSPITATION. IN ADDITION TO THE PROGRAM CONTROL OPTIONS AND CLIMATOLOGICAL DATA, THERE ARE 38 OTHER PARAMETERS REQUIRED BY THE MODEL. A PARTIAL SUMMARY OF THE FINAL SIMULATION RESULTS OF THE STUDY WATERSHEDS FOR A FIVE YEAR PERIOD IS GIVEN IN A TABLE. APPLICATION OF THE MODEL TO SIX RURAL WATERSHEDS FOR FIVE YEARS OF RECORDS SHOWED THAT THE MODEL DOES REASONABLY SIMULATE AVERAGE DAILY STREAMFLOW. A SERIOUS DRAWBACK TO USING THIS MODEL IS THE TIME REQUIRED TO BECOME ACQUAINTED WITH THE MODEL IN ORDER TO INTERPRET THE OUTPUT AND MAKE PROPER ADJUSTMENTS OF THE PARAMETERS.
