CATENARY LANTERNS FOR WIDE ROADS

DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF AN INCREASINGLY USED LIGHTING SYSTEM WHICH USES LANTERNS SUSPENDED AXIALLY FROM LONGITUDINAL CATENARY CABLES OVER THE CENTRAL RESERVATION ON WIDELY-SPACED MASTS. EXCELLENT VISUAL GUIDANCE IS PROVIDED, ESPECIALLY AT BENDS AND JUNCTIONS, AND THE SYSTEM GIVES UNIFORMITY IN VERTICAL ILLUMINATION. RESULTS OBTAINED BY THE LIGHTING DIVISION OF THE MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT IN THE HAGUE ON AN EXPERIMENTAL INSTALLATION ARE PRESENTED. THE AIM WAS TO FIND CATENARY-LIGHTING FITTINGS CAPABLE OF LIGHTING VERY WIDE ROADS. TWO TYPES OF FITTINGS WERE TESTED. THE FITTINGS, BOTH OF THEM HOUSING LOW-PRESSURE SODIUM LAMPS, WERE SUSPENDED AT A HEIGHT OF 15M ABOVE THE GROUND AT 18M INTERVALS. THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE MASTS WAS 90M. THE RESULTS WERE MOST ENCOURAGING. /TRRL/
