THE ROAD IN RELATION TO TRAFFIC REQUIREMENTS--FRANCE

THIS REPORT DEALS WITH SUBJECTS RELATING TO THE GEOMETRY, TO THE PAVEMENTS AND TO THE EQUIPMENT OF ROADS WHICH HAVE DEVELOPED IN FRANCE SINCE THE 1967 TOKYO CONFERENCE, SUFFICIENTLY TO MERIT THEIR PLACE HERE. THE PROBLEM OF THE LIMITS FOR RAISING THE DESIGN SPEED OF THESE ROADS AND HIGHWAYS IS EXAMINED, AND THE TECHNICAL DISCIPLINES ASSOCIATED WITH AN INCREASE IN SPEED ARE ANALYZED FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF THE GEOMETRY OF THE ROAD, PAVEMENTS ENGINEERING STRUCTURES, EQUIPMENT AND OPERATION. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT IN FRANCE SPEED INCREASES ARE NOT EXPECTED IN THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE. THE SUBJECT OF NEW ROADWAY GEOMETRIC STANDARDS IS DISCUSSED, AND THE RESULTS OF EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE PASSAGE TIME OF VEHICLES AND THE GEOMETRY OF THE ROAD AND THE TRAFFIC IS PRESENTED. ALSO DISCUSSED ARE THE GRAFTING ON OF SPECIAL LANES FOR SLOW VEHICLES AND INTERSECTIONS. THE REPORT PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF STUDIES RELATING TO: THE RESISTANCE TO SLIDING, TO THE LEVEL AND TO THE DRAINAGE OF PAVEMENTS; TECHNOLOGY OF SURFACE MATERIALS WHICH OFFER THE BEST ADHERENCE QUALITIES; CUTTING DOWN RESONANCE EFFECTS; AND THE THICKNESS OF SUPERFICIAL SHEETS OF WATER IN DIVERSE CONDITION OF SURFACE RUGOSITY AND SLOPE. THE CONCLUSION OF THE REPORT PRESENTS TWO ASPECTS OF THE ASSISTANCE GIVEN TO ROADWAY TRAFFIC BY THE USE OF MODERN METHODS FOR TREATING AND DIFFUSING INFORMATION.
