A DISCRETE-ELEMENT METHOD OF ANALYSIS FOR COMBINED BENDING AND SHEAR DEFORMATION OF A BEAM

A METHOD OF ANALYSIS FOR THE COMBINED EFFECTS OF BENDING AND SHEAR DEFORMATIONS IS PRESENTED. ALTHOUGH THE METHOD IS PRIMARILY DESIGNED FOR THE ANALYSIS OF BEAMS, IT CAN BE APPLIED TO OTHER STRUCTURAL PROBLEMS. THE METHOD IS APPLICABLE TO BEAMS THAT HAVE ABRUPT, OR POINT-BY-POINT, VARIATIONS IN THEIR STRUCTURAL PROPERTIES. ALSO, THE BEAM MAY BE SUBJECTED TO ANY CONFIGURATION OF TRANSVERSE OR LONGITUDINAL LOADS, AND IT MAY BE SUPPORTED IN ANY REASONABLE MANNER. THERE ARE THREE IMPORTANT FEATURES OF THE METHOD PRESENTED. FIRST, A DISCRETE-ELEMENT MODEL IS SUBSTITUTED FOR THE REAL STRUCTURE. SECOND, A SYSTEM OF ALGEBRAIC EQUATIONS WHICH DESCRIBE THE LOAD-DEFLECTION BEHAVIOR OF THE MODEL IS WRITTEN. FINALLY, THESE EQUATIONS ARE SOLVED FOR THE UNKNOWN DEFLECTIONS BY A MODIFIED FORM OF GAUSSIAN ELIMINATION. A COMPUTER PROGRAM, SHRBM 1, WHICH UTILIZES THE METHOD OF ANALYSIS PRESENTED HEREIN PROVIDES AN EFFICIENT MEANS OF SOLVING PRACTICAL PROBLEMS. THE CORRECT USAGE OF THE PROGRAM AND THE GENERALITY OF THE METHOD ARE DEMONSTRATED BY A SERIES OF EXAMPLE PROBLEMS. /AUTHOR/
