SAFETY, SERVICEABILITY AND EFFICIENCY OF LIMIT DESIGN FOR REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS AND FRAMES
SAFETY, SERVICEABILITY AND EFFICIENCY OF SOLUTIONS BASED ON VARIOUS LIMIT DESIGN METHODS, AS APPLIED TO SOME TYPICAL REINFORCED CONCRETE BUILDING STRUCTURES, ARE COMPARED. SAFETY IS CONSIDERED IN RELATION TO THE FAILURE OF STRUCTURES AS COLLAPSE MECHANISMS. SERVICEABILITY IS EVALUATED IN TERMS OF THE SAFETY AGAINST FIRST YIELD OF CRITICAL SECTIONS. STRUCTURAL EFFICIENCY FOR EACH LIMIT DESIGN METHOD IS EVALUATED BY THE RATIO OF FLEXURAL STEEL CONSUMPTION TO THAT RESULTING FROM AN ELASTIC DESIGN. SIX EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL BUILDING STRUCTURES (TWO CONTINUOUS BEAMS, TWO MULTI-STORY, MULTI-BAY BRACED FRAMES AND TWO SINGLE-STORY, UNBRACED FRAMES) ILLUSTRATE THE RELEVANT FEATURES OF SOLUTIONS BASED ON EXISTING LIMIT DESIGN METHODS. /AUTHOR/
