INVESTIGATION OF SUBCRITICAL CRACK GROWTH BY MEANS OF RUPTURE MECHANICS

THE TWO METHODS DESCRIBED ALLOW THE QUANTITATIVE AND CONTINUOUS MEASUREMENT OF SUBCRITICAL CRACK GROWTH BY FATIGUE OR STRESS CORROSION CRACKING. THE MEASUREMENT OF CRACK GROWTH BY RECORDING THE NOTCH OPENING DISPLACEMENT HAS PROVED VERY USEFUL BECAUSE THE COMMON EQUIPMENT FOR KIC DETERMINATION CAN BE USED. THE INVESTIGATION OF THE FATIGUE CRACK GROWTH OF A HIGH STRENGTH STEEL SHOWED THE RELATION BETWEEN THE CRACK GROWTH PER CYCLE, THE CYCLIC ALTERNATION OF THE STRESS INTENSITY FACTOR AND THE MATERIAL CONSTANTS. CRACK GROWTH RATES, DETERMINED MICROSCOPICALLY BY MEASURING FATIGUE STRIATION SPACINGS ON THE FRACTURE SURFACE, ARE IN GOOD AGREEMENT WITH THE MACROSCOPIC CRACK GROWTH RATES. THE PROPAGATION OF STRESS CORROSION CRACKS EQUALLY DEPENDS ON THE STRESS INTENSITY FACTOR. BELOW A CRITICAL VALUE, NO STRESS CORROSION CRACKING IS OBSERVED. /RRL/
