FURTHER TESTS TO DETERMINE SHEAR STRESSES IN REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS
FOUR DETAILED TESTS ON THE SHEAR ZONES OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS ARE DESCRIBED, AND THE RESULTS OF A SERIES OF COMPUTATIONS ON MEASURED STRAINS ARE PRESENTED. UP TO FIRST CRACKING OF THE BEAM THERE IS A ROUGHLY PARABOLIC SHEAR STRESS DISTRIBUTION IN THE CROSS-SECTION. AT FAILURE, THE COMPRESSION ZONE CARRIES BETWEEN 23% AND 40% OF THE TOTAL SHEAR ON THE BEAM AT CRITICAL SECTIONS; THE REST OF THE SHEAR FORCE MUST THEREFORE BE CARRIED BELOW THE NEUTRAL AXIS. /RRL/A/
