FATIGUE BEHAVIOR OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BRIDGE BEAMS

BASIC CONSIDERATIONS RELATING TO DESIGN PRINCIPLES FOR PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BRIDGE MEMBERS SUBJECTED TO FATIGUE LOADING ARE PRESENTED, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE EXISTING LITERATURE ON THE SUBJECT. A NEW APPROACH UTILIZING AN L-N CURVE IS MADE, AND PILOT FATIGUE TESTS ARE DESCRIBED WHICH WERE CONDUCTED ON PRETENSIONED, PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BEAMS. A TOTAL OF FOUR SPECIMENS WERE SUBJECTED TO DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS OF LOAD RANGE AND CYCLES OF LOADING. THREE BEAMS WERE LOADED CUMULATIVELY AND SUBSEQUENTLY LOADED TO FAILURE STATICALLY. ONE BEAM WAS LOADED TO FAILURE IN FATIGUE. RESULTS OF THE TESTS, WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON CRACK WIDTHS, ARE DISCUSSED AND CONCLUSIONS NOTED. /RRL/A/
