ULTIMATE STRENGTH DESIGN-SERVICEABILITY INVESTIGATION. A UNIFIED METHOD FOR REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGE DESIGN

A GENERAL THEORETICAL METHOD IS PRESENTED WHICH PROVIDES SUCH CONTINUITY THAT ULTIMATE STRENGTH DESIGN AND SERVICE LOAD INVESTIGATIONS MAY BOTH BE UNDERTAKEN USING IDENTICALLY THE SAME GENERAL EQUATIONS. THE PROPOSED THEORY IS PURELY MATHEMATICAL AND IS ENTIRELY INDEPENDENT OF TEST DATA EXCEPT THAT WHICH IS NECESSARY TO ESTABLISH THE FUNDAMENTAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN STRESS AND STRAIN FOR THE COMPONENT MATERIALS. ONCE THE STRESS-STRAIN RELATIONS HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED FOR PREDETERMINED CONDITIONS, ONE MAY THEN PROCEED TO DERIVE ALL OF THE GENERAL EXPRESSIONS NECESSARY TO FORMULATE A DESIGN. THE APPROACH IS PURELY THEORETICAL, MAKING USE OF STATICS AND STRAIN COMPATIBILITY. NEVERTHELESS, ALTHOUGH TEST DATA ARE NOT USED AT ALL TO DERIVE THE GENERAL EXPRESSIONS NEEDED IN DESIGN AND REVIEW, THE THEORY AND THE TEST DATA ARE IN EXCELLENT AGREEMENT FOR BEAMS AND FOR ECCENTRICALLY LOADED SHORT COLUMNS. NUMERICAL EXAMPLES ARE PROVIDED TO ILLUSTRATE THE USE OF THE METHOD FOR REVIEW OF SECTIONS AT SERVICE LOADS. /RRL/A/
