THE THERMAL BEHAVIOR OF THE BEACHLEY VIADUCT/WYE BRIDGE

MEASUREMENTS OF TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTIONS AND MOVEMENTS IN THE BEACHLEY VIADUCT/WYE BRIDGE (A STEEL BOX STRUCTURE WHICH CARRIES THE M4 MOTORWAY WESTWARD FROM THE SEVERN BRIDGE) WERE MADE IN 1966 AND 1967 TO DETERMINE THE RANGE OF TEMPERATURE AND AMOUNT OF MOVEMENT EXPERIENCED BY THE STRUCTURE. A METHOD OF PREDICTING THE STEEL TEMPERATURES USING SHADE AIR TEMPERATURE AND RADIATION DATA HAS BEEN DEVELOPED. FOR EXTREME CONDITIONS OF RADIATION AND SHADE TEMPERATURE, THE PREDICTED EXTREMES OF TEMPERATURE WHICH THE STRUCTURE IS LIKELY TO EXPERIENCE WHEN SURFACED WITH 1-1/2 IN OF MASTIC ASPHALT ARE: (1) HIGHEST MEAN BRIDGE TEMPERATURE 51 DEGREES C (124 DEGREES F); (2) LOWEST MEAN BRIDGE TEMPERATURE -29 DEGREES C (-4 DEGREES F); (3) MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TOP FLANGE PLATE AND BOTTOM FLANGE OF BOX 26 DEGREES C (46 DEGREES F). THE TOTAL PREDICTED MOVEMENT IS 0.89 M (35.0IN). THE TEMPERATURE EXTREMES MEASURED DURING 1966/67, WHEN SURFACED WITH 1-1/2 IN OF MASTIC ASPHALT, WERE: (1) HIGHEST MEAN BRIDGE TEMPERATURE 42 DEGREES C (107 DEGREES F); (2) LOWEST MEAN BRIDGE TEMPERATURE -4 DEGREES C (+24 DEGREES F); (3) MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TOP FLANGE PLATE AND BOTTOM FLANGE OF BOX 23 DEGREES C (42 DEGREES F). THE TOTAL MOVEMENT DURING 1966067 WAS 0.58 M (23.0IN). /RRL/
