TESTS ON FOUR PROTOTYPE REINFORCED CONCRETE HINGES

FOUR DESIGNS OF REINFORCED CONCRETE HINGE HAVE BEEN TESTED EXTENSIVELY TO DETERMINE THEIR SUITABILITY FOR USE IN PARTICULAR BRIDGES. TWO WERE, ESSENTIALLY, FREYSSINET HINGES, WITH VERY LITTLE REINFORCEMENT THROUGH THE THROATS, THE THIRD WAS DESIGNED AS A MESNAGER HINGE AND THE FOURTH WAS A SADDLE BEARING. ALL THE DESIGNS WERE ABLE TO CARRY THE DESIGN LOADS WITH AMPLE FACTORS OF SAFETY AND TO PERMIT ROTATIONS GREATLY IN EXCESS OF THE DESIGN REQUIREMENTS. HOWEVER, THE TESTS SHOWED THAT, IN FREYSSINET HINGES REQUIRED TO PERMIT LARGE ROTATIONS, THE DESIGN AVERAGE COMPRESSIVE STRESS IN THE CONCRETE OF THE THROATS SHOULD BE CONSIDERABLY GREATER THAN HALF THE CUBE STRENGTH IF PARTIAL CRACKING OF THE THROAT IS TO BE AVOIDED. /RRL/A/
