RESEARCH ON ORTHOTROPIC STEEL PLATE BRIDGE DECKS

THE RESULTS OF A THEORETICAL INVESTIGATION INTO THE BEHAVIOR OF THE DECK PLATE ARE REPORTED. ORTHOTROPIC PLATE THEORY IS USED TO ASSESS THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE PLATE TO THE OVERALL LOAD DISTRIBUTION ACTION OF THE DECK. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS, THE INCLUSION OF EFFECT OF TRANSVERSE RIGIDITY OF THE DECK PLATE IN THE ANALYSIS CAN LEAD TO A SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN STRESS DISTRIBUTION. ATTENTION IS THEN FOCUSED ON THE LOCAL BEHAVIOR OF THE DECK PLATE UNDER A WHEEL LOAD. THE LOAD CONSIDERED IS THAT SPECIFIED IN B.S. 153:PART 3A. DEFLECTIONS AND STRESSES IN THE PLATE OF AN OPEN STRINGER DECK, DUE TO SUCH LOADING, ARE PRESENTED FOR THE RANGE OF STRINGER SPACINGS AND DECK PLATE THICKNESSES COMMONLY USED IN PRACTICE. RESULTS ARE ALSO PRESENTED FOR THE CASE WHERE ALLOWANCE IS MADE FOR DISPERSION OF THE WHEEL LOAD THROUGH THE DECK SURFACING. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RESULTS IN RELATION TO DECK PLATE DESIGN IS DISCUSSED. A REPORT OF A FULL SCALE TEST CARRIED OUT ON AN ACTUAL BRIDGE DECK IS DESCRIBED. THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS ARE COMPARED WITH THOSE OBTAINED USING ORTHOTROPIC PLATE THEORY. EXPERIMENTAL INFLUENCE SURFACES FOR STRINGER BENDING STRESSES ARE PRESENTED TOGETHER WITH FIELD DATA ON THE WIDTH OF DECK PLATE WHICH ACTS EFFECTIVELY WITH STRINGERS IN BENDING. MEASURED STRESSES IN THE DECK PLATE UNDER A LOAD SIMULATING THE BRITISH STANDARD WHEEL LOAD, AGREE WELL WITH THE THEORETICAL RESULTS PREDICTED PREVIOUSLY. /RRL/
