INVESTIGATION OF SCOUR AT SELECTED BRIDGE CROSSINGS IN ALASKA

SCOUR WAS STUDIED AT A BRIDGE ON THE KNIK RIVER, ALASKA, DURING THIS PERIOD. AN INSIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF SCOUR, BOTH GENERAL AND LOCAL, OCCURRED DURING THE PEAK FLOW OF THE RIVER AT THE NEW HIGHWAY CROSSING. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT: (1) THERE IS NO NEED TO INSTRUMENT A BRIDGE PIER TO MEASURE LOCAL SCOUR, (2) IF THE STREAM IS SUITABLE FOR USE OF A BOAT, MAGNITUDE OF SCOUR CAN BE DETERMINED WITH A BOAT- MOUNTED TRANSDUCER AND RECORDING FATHOMETER, AND (3) IF A BOAT CANNOT BE USED, SOUNDINGS CAN BE MADE WITH A BOOM AND A SOUNDING WEIGHT OR A TRANSDUCER WHICH IS INCORPORATED INTO A SOUNDING WEIGHT AND SUSPENDED BELOW THE WATER SURFACE. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT A NETWORK OF BRIDGE SITES BE ESTABLISHED FOR FLOOD-SCOUR SURVEILLANCE THAT ARE WIDELY LOCATED TO INCREASE THE LIKELIHOOD OF EXPERIENCING A FLOOD. DATA COLLECTED OVER A WIDE RANGE OF CONDITIONS SHOULD ALLOW THE VERIFICATION OF EXPERIMENT RESULTS OF SCOUR OBTAINED BY LABORATORY STUDIES UNDER CONTROLLED CONDITIONS.
