NEOPRENE BRIDGE BEARING PADS UNDER COMPRESSION AND REPEATED SHEAR

BRIDGE BEARING PADS OF PLAIN CUT NEOPRENE AS WELL AS SOME WITH STEEL LAMINATIONS, WERE SUBJECTED TO SHEARING LOADS WHILE UNDER A CONSTANT VERTICAL COMPRESSION. THE SHEARING LOADS WERE ALTERNATING AND REPETITIVE, FOR DEFLECTIONS UP TO PLUS OR MINUS 50 PERCENT OF THE UNCOMPRESSED PAD THICKNESS. SOME TESTS WERE MADE WITH THE SHEARING LOAD IN ONLY ONE DIRECTION FOR DEFLECTIONS UP TO 95 PRECENT OF THE UNCOMPRESSED PAD THICKNESS. CHAFING AND RAVELING OF THE LOADED SURFACES WAS OBSERVED, IN ONE TEST, AFTER ONLY TWO HUNDRED CYCLES OF ALTERNATING SHEARING LOAD. TEARING OCCURED IN SOME SPECIMENS FOR WHICH THE SHEARING LOAD WAS ALTERNATED AT THE FAST RATE OF ONE-HUNDRED LOAD CYCLES PER MINUTE. ONE LAMINATED SPECIMEN SUBJECTED TO REPEATED SHEAR DEVELOPED SOME SEPERATION OF NEOPRENE AND THE METAL LAMINATIONS. ONE LAMINATED SPECIMEN SUBJECTED TO AN 85 PERCENT DEFLECTION WITH A 750 PSI VERTICAL COMPRESSIVE LOAD, DEVELOPED PERMANENT FLEXURAL DEFORMATIONS OF THE LAMINATIONS. /AUTHOR/
