AN INVESTIGATION OF THE ULTIMATE SHEAR STRENGTH OF TWO-WAY CONTINUOUS BRIDGE SLABS SUBJECTED TO CONCENTRATED LOADS

THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF CONTINUOUS TWO-WAY REINFORCED CONCRETE SQUARE SLABS IS INVESTIGATED. MODELS OF THESE SLABS, FORMING PART OF A TWO-LANE TWO-GIRDER BRIDGE, WERE TESTED UNDER A SINGLE CONCENTRATED LOAD. THE ULTIMATE SHEAR STRENGTH OBTAINED IS STUDIED IN RELATION TO REINFORCEMENT PERCENTAGE AND LOCATION OF LOAD. IN THE SLABS TESTED, DIFFERENT BOUNDARY CONDITIONS EXISTED, AND THE EFFECTS OF SUCH BOUNDARY CONDITIONS WERE INCORPORATED IN THE STUDY OF SHEAR AND FLEXURAL STRENGTHS OF THE SLABS. IT IS SHOWN THAT THE PRESENT DESIGN PROCEDURE FOR BRIDGE SLABS IS TOO CONSERVATIVE AND THAT YIELD LINE METHOD CAN BE SAFELY AND ECONOMICALLY APPLIED TO THE DESIGN OF SUCH SLABS. A MINIMUM REINFORCEMENT PERCENTAGE FOR BRIDGE SLABS IS PROPOSED. /RATAOC/
