MODERN DEVELOPMENTS IN DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF LONG-SPAN BRIDGES

MODERN TRENDS IN BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION ARE SHOWN FROM RIVETED TO WELDED FABRICATION, FROM LATTICE GIRDERS TO STRUCTURES FORMED FROM STIFFENED PLATES AND OTHER DEVELOPEMNTS. TO PRESERVE AERODYNAMIC STABILITY, SUSPENSION BRIDGES HAVE NORMALLY EMPLOYED OPEN-GIRDER CONSTRUCTION BUT WELDED PLATE FABRICATION WAS INCORPORATED INTO THE SEVERN BRIDGE, AS WELL AS OTHER GOOD EXAMPLES OF MODERN DEVELOPMENTS. THE CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN OF THE SEVERN BRIDGE IS DISCUSSED. THE EVOLUTION OF BRIDGE DESIGN THROUGH AERODYNAMIC TESTS IN WIND TUNNELS AND OTHER CONSIDERATIONS ARE EXPLAINED. ECONOMICAL MEASURES WERE USED ALTHOUGH NO FACET OF SAFETY OR EFFICIENCY WAS COMPROMISED. A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF ALL PHASES OF DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION IS GIVEN SHOWING THE NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN THIS FIELD AS WELL AS GIVING ALL SPECIFICATIONS. /CGRA/
