THE VIBRATION OF MULTI-GIRDER HIGHWAY BRIDGES
PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS HAVE SHOWN THAT TREATING A BRIDGE AS A SINGLE BEAM IS INADEQUATE IN THE ANALYSIS OF MOST MULTI-GIRDER HIGHWAY BRIDGES. THE TRANSVERSE DISTRIBUTION OF DEFLECTION MUST BE CONSIDERED AS WELL AS THE LONGITUDINAL DISTRIBUTION. A THEORY UTILIZING A SIMPLE MECHANISM OF DYNAMIC RESPONSE WAS DEVELOPED TO PREDICT THE NATURAL FREQUENCIES OF VIBRATION AND THE RELATIVE DISPLACEMENTS OF A MULTI-GIRDER BRIDGE UNDER DYNAMIC LOADING. THE THEORETICAL PREDICTIONS WERE VERIFIED BY TESTS ON MODEL STRUCTURES. APPLICATION OF THE PROPOSED METHOD OF ANALYSIS TO REAL BRIDGES INDICATES THAT THE METHOD EXPLAINS THE OBSERVED PHENOMENA ON THESE STRUCTURES VERY WELL. /CGRA/
