INVESTIGATION OF THE USE OF PLATE ANALYSIS IN THE DESIGN OF SLAB BRIDGES

THIS STUDY DETERMINED THAT THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PLATE ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE STUDIED IN SLAB BRIDGE DESIGN PRACTICE IN KANSAS COULD NOT BE JUSTIFIED BASED ON ECONOMIC CRITERIA. THIS IS BECAUSE THE COST OF DEVELOPMENT OF THE TECHNIQUE WOULD NOT BE OFFSET BY REDUCED CONSTRUCTION COST. IT WAS FOUND HOWEVER, THAT THE USE OF THE PLATE ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE WOULD RESULT IN A DIFFERENT DISTRIBUTION OF REINFORCING STEEL FOR SKEWED SLAB BRIDGES. THIS IMPLIES THAT THE CURRENT DESIGN TECHNIQUE PRODUCES BRIDGES WITH AN INCONSISTENT SAFETY FACTOR. THEREFORE, FURTHER CONSIDERATION SHOULD BE GIVEN TO IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PLATE ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE OR SOME MODIFICATION OF THE PRESENT DESIGN TECHNIQUE, BASED ON A MORE ACCURATE DESIGN AS JUSTIFICATION.
