HEAT ACCELERATED CURING IN THE PRODUCTION OF CONCRETE

PROBLEMS ARISING FROM TRADITIONAL HEAT-CURING MAY BE SOLVED BY USING STEAM-INJECTED HOT CONCRETE INSTEAD OF APPLYING HEAT AFTER CASTING. WORKING ON THE PREMISE THAT STRENGTH LOSSES IN CONCRETE COULD BE DUE TO THE DIFFERENT COEFFICIENTS OF THERMAL EXPANSION OF THE VARIOUS CONSTITUENTS, THE AUTHOR DEVISED A METHOD OF HEATING CONCRETE IN THE MIXER BEFORE CASTING. PROBLEMS OF TRANSPORTATION OF THE HOT CONCRETE (OPTIMAL TEMPERATURE 60C) WERE SOLVED AS WELL AS THOSE FOR PRE-HEATING MOLDS TO PREVENT HEAT LOSS. WHEN CONSIDERING PRESTRESSING CONCRETE THE AUTHOR ARGUES THAT HEATING THE NEWLY-CAST BEAMS CAN "RELIEVE" THE STRESS IN THE WIRES BETWEEN THE BEAMS, THUS CREATING A CONDITION SIMILAR TO CUTTING THESE WIRES WHILE THE CONCRETE IS STILL YOUNG.
