TESTS OF A 1/10-SCALE CONCRETE MODEL TO AID DESIGN OF A LARGE PRESTRESSED BRIDGE

THE THREE SISTERS BRIDGE ACROSS THE POTOMAC RIVER, WHICH WILL SERVE BOTH AS AN EXTENSION OF I-66 AND AS AN ADDITIONAL TRANSFLUVINE CONNECTION BETWEEN VIRGINIA AND WASHINGTON, D.C., IS UNIQUE IN SEVERAL RESPECTS. IN ADDITION TO ITS 750- FT MAIN SPAN, IT HAS CURVED 440-FT SIDE SPANS, AND THE 110- FT ROADWAY IS THE WIDEST OF ANY POSTTENSIONED, CANTILIVERED BRIDGE YET BUILT. CONSEQUENTLY, IT WAS DECIDED THAT THIS DESIGN SHOULD BE SUPPLEMENTED BY CONSTRUCTION AND TESTING TO DESTRUCTION OF A 1/10-SCALE MODEL OF THE PROTOTYPE. SINCE THE PROTOTYPE IS SYMMETRICAL ABOUT THE CENTER OF THE MAIN SPAN, ONLY HALF OF THE BRIDGE WAS MODELED. THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE PRESTRESSED CONCRETE MODEL, THE TESTING PROCEDURE, INSTRUMENTATION, AND DATA PROCESSING ARE DESCRIBED. RESULTS OF THE TESTS ARE REPORTED.
