SUMMARY OF FULL-SCALE LABORATORY TESTS OF CONCRETE SLABS REINFORCEMENT WITH COLD-FORMED STEEL DECKING

BEGINNING IN 1966 THE IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY HAS CONDUCTED 273 STATIC-LOAD TESTS ON SEVEN TYPES OF COLD-FORMED DECKS FROM FIVE DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS. THE PRESENT REPORT DEALS WITH FULL-SACLE, TWO-WAY SLABS CONSISTING OF A SINGLE SPAN ON FOUR SIMPLY SUPPORTED EDGES. FOUR SLABS WERE TESTED, TWO OF THEM ADDITIONALLY REINFORCED WITH WELDED WIRE FABRIC. THE FOLLOWING FINDINGS WERE MADE: (1) IN ALL CASES FAILURE BY A SHEAR-BOND ACTION THAT WAS PRECIPITATED BY HORIZONTAL SLIPPAGE BETWEEN STEEL DECKING AND CONCRETE. (2) SLAB 1, WITH ONLY NOMINAL SUPPLEMENTARY REINFORCEMENT AND WITH ALL FOUR CORNERS TIED DOWN, EXHIBITED SIGNIFICANTLY STIFFER BEHAVIOR THAN THE OTHERS. (3) SLAB 2, WITH THE LARGEST AMOUNT OF SUPPLEMENTARY FABRIC, SUSTAINED BOTH THE LARGEST TEST LOAD AND THE LARGEST ULTIMATE DEFLECTION. (4) SLAB 3, WITH NO SUPPLEMENTAL REINFORCEMENT, CARRIED AN ULTIMATE LOAD 57% THAT OF SLAB 2 AND HAD A MUCH LOWER ULTIMATE DEFLECTION. (5) IN GENERAL THE TOP SURFACE CRACKING BEHAVIOR OF ALL SLABS WAS EXCELLENT. EXCESSIVE CRACKING DID NOT OCCUR UNTIL ULTIMATE LOAD WAS IMMINENT, AND EVEN THEN THE CRACKS WERE QUITE SMALL.
