THE DESIGN CRITERIA AGAINST WIND EFFECTS FOR PROPOSED HONSHU-SHIKOKU BRIDGES
A SYSTEM OF DESIGN CRITERIA TO COUNTER WIND EFFECTS ARE DISCUSSED. THE DESIGN WIND SPEED SHOULD BE BASED ON VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL DIMENSIONS OF THE STRUCTURE AND ON THE EXPECTED MAXIMUM WIND VELOCITY OF TEN MINUTES DURATION IN A RETURN PERIOD OF 100 YEARS. DRAG COEFFICIENTS SHOULD BE DETERMINED FOR EACH STRUCTURAL ELEMENT. CRITICAL WIND SPEEDS FOR SELF-EXCITED OSCILLATION AND BUCKLING OF SUSPENDED STRUCTURES SHOULD BE SPECIFIED, BASED ON DYNAMIC ANALYSES AND WIND TUNNEL MODEL TESTS.
