TIEBACKS FOR BANK OF AMERICA BUILDING EXCAVATION WALL

THE DEEP BASEMENT OF SAN FRANCISCO'S NEW BANK OF AMERICA BUILDING EMPLOYS TIEBACKS TO SUPPORT ADJACENT SANDY SOILS. THE TIEBACKS ANCHOR A BULKHEAD CONSISTING OF STRUCTURAL STEEL SOLDIER BEAMS IN CONCRETED, DRILLED HOLES OF 30-IN. DIAMETER. EACH SOLDIER BEAM CONSISTS OF TWO CHANNELS, BACK TO BACK AND SEPARATED BY 13 INCHES. BETWEEN THESE CHANNELS RUN THE PRESTRESSED TIEBACKS. WOOD LAGGING SPANS THE DISTANCE BETWEEN SOLDIER BEAMS (8 FT. CENTER TO CENTER). THE PRESTRESSED TIEBACKS ARE ANCHORED IN GROUT PLACED ONLY BEYOND THE ASSUMED FAILURE PLANT. THE TIEBACKS ARE HIGH-STRENGTH STEEL RODS ASTM A322 AND A29. FOLLOWING COMPLETION OF THE BASEMENT WALLS AND FLOORS, THE EARTH PRESSURES WERE RESISTED BY THE BUILDING ITSELF AND THE BULKHEAD WAS NO LONGER NEEDED.
