AN ALGEBRAIC SOLUTION PROCESS FORMULATED IN ANTICIPATION OF BANDED LINEAR EQUATIONS

A GENERAL METHOD FOR THE SOLUTION OF LARGE, SPARSELY BANDED, POSITIVE-DEFINITE, COEFFICIENT MATRICES IS PRESENTED. THE PROCEDURES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED SPECIFICALLY TO DEAL WITH MATRICES GENERATED BY THREE AND FIVE-WIDE DIFFERENCE OPERATORS, WHETHER SYMMETRICAL OR UNSYMMETRICAL. THE METHOD USED IN THE SOLUTION ALGORITHM IS DISCUSSED, ALONG WITH THE ASSOCIATED PROOFS. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF COMPUTATIONS NEEDED ALONG WITH THE AMOUNT OF STORAGE REQUIRED ARE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION. GRAPHS SHOWING ACTUAL TIMES INVOLVED FOR A WIDE RANGE OF PROBLEMS IS PRESENTED.
