APPLICATION OF SAND-GRAVEL-SLAG MIXTURES ON HIGHWAYS OPENED TO TRAFFIC /IN FRENCH/

OBSERVATIONS ARE PRESENTED MADE DURING THE LEVELLING, STRENGTHENING AND WIDENING OF 75 KMS OF MAIN ROADS AND 18 KMS OF SECONDARY ROADS IN FRANCE BY MEANS OF SAND-GRAVEL-SLAG MIXTURE. THE MIXTURE WAS APPLIED TO HIGHWAYS CARRYING UP TO 11600 VEHICLES A DAY WITH A PEAK VOLUME OF 26000 VEHICLES A DAY, 15 PER CENT BEING HEAVY VEHICLES. UNDER FAVOURABLE WEATHER CONDITIONS THE APPLICATION PRESENTED NO PROBLEMS. TRAFFIC SPEEDS UP THE RATE OF COMPACTION AND SETTING OF THE MIXTURE, BUT DELAYS THE DELIVERY OF SUPPLIES RESULTING IN THE SLOWING DOWN OF THE WORK. PROCTECTION OF THE MIXTURE WITH A SURFACE DRESSING WITHIN 24 OR 48 HOURS OF COMPACTION IS ESSENTIAL, OTHERWISE POTHOLES AND OTHER DEFECTS OCCUR. BASIC BITUMINOUS EMULSIONS GAVE MUCH BETTER RESULTS UNDER TRAFFIC THAN CUT-BACKS. SURFACE DRESSINGS MUST NOT BE APPLIED TO WET MIXTURES, AND SAND-GRAVEL-SLAG MIXTURES SHOULD ONLY BE USED DURING THE SUMMER. MENTION IS MADE OF THE THOROUGH INVESTIGATION TO WHICH CALCAREOUS SAND-GRAVEL-SLAG MIXTURES MUST BE SUBJECTED BEFORE ACCEPTANCE AND TESTS ON THEIR POROSITY, SUSCEPTIBILITY TO FROST, AND SPECIFIC SURFACE. /LCPC/A/RRL/
